Soil reinforcement by wet process vibro stone columns for the construction of the Cevital plant.

The project

This project was for the construction of the Cevital oilseed crushing plant including a storage silo with a capacity of 80,000 tonnes, as well as several sugar conditioning and processing facilities. The overloads applied to the ground were about 420 kN/m².

The challenge

The land was essentially composed of muddy sand, characterised by peak resistances from qc = 0.6 MPa to 5 MPa up to 18 metres deep then denser sands. Soil reinforcement was required to ensure adequate load-bearing capacity for the structures.

The solution

To increase bearing capacity and reduce settlement, Keller installed 106,750 linear metres of columns at an average depth of 18 metres.
